• The Somali sheep is a direct ancestor of the Blackhead Persian breed, which was developed in South Africa from the late 19th to early 20th century and has been widely used for crossbreeding in many tropical regions.
• These sheep are also known as Blackhead Berbera.
• Some individuals lack an external ear flap.
